Twitter Music Site Goes Live

Published

on

A Twitter Music website is now live, confirming that a music service from the company will arrive soon.

Twitter is introducing a music feature that is expected to use the listening habits of users’ friends and contacts to recommend music for them to listen to, giving its more than 200 million users more to send tweets about and another reason to stay logged in. But exactly what form the music service will take is unclear.

Attempting to sign in on the site redirects users to an authorization request for an app called “Trending Music Web,” although it does not grant users who try to sign in access to the site itself.

The authorization request also indicates that this is a “web version” of the app, implying a mobile version is also in existence.

Thursday Twitter announced its acquisition of We Are Hunted, a music discovery service that creates trending charts for music being played online, and allows users to listen to their favorite songs as well as discover new artists.

We Are Hunted focused on the top trending music on social media, and the Twitter Music app will likely do the same — plus suggest what other tunes you might like based on what you’ve listened to, and allow you to buy tracks via iTunes.

“Music is one of the most tweeted topics,” said Ted Cohen, a former label executive who is now a consultant to digital music companies. “Discovery is critical to the growth of music, and the new gatekeeper is recommendations from trusted sources.”
