Silic: The Impossible to Stain T-Shirt

Published

on

Silic is a concept T-shirt that promises to stay dry and repel water-based stains.

According to Aamir Patel, the creator of Silic, the shirt is embedded with “hydrophobic nanotechnology“, which uses microscopic structures to repel water-based liquids by forming a layer of air between the fabric and liquid molecules.

The polyester fabric is layered with billions of silica particles. These cause water-based liquids to simply roll off the material rather than soak into it.

To fund his project, Patel created a page on Kickstarter, a crowdfunding website. The shirt has now exceeded its funding goal of $20,000 before the campaign closes on January 26. The shirts are expected to be on sale online from May and will cost around £30.

According to Patel’s Kickstarter page, there are certain steps wearers have to take to make sure the T-shirt stays waterproof. These include not using of fabric softener in a machine wash, no bleaching, washing with like colors and no ironing. Patel also advises wearers not to dry clean the shirt.

The T-shirt must also be put through a tumble dryer on a low heat at least once every three washes to reactivate the water repellency.

“The T-shirts we have now are completely safe and will last for up to 80 washes, so you get around about two year’s worth of wear out of it”, Patel said.
