In a surprising move, Apple said on Wednesday that it will now be allowing individuals to repair their own phone in what seems to be a victory for advocates of the “right-to-repair” movement.

The news comes as Apple continues to receive harsh criticism and numerous lawsuits following its current procedures and the tight control on its repair program where the tech giant has highly restricted repairs that could only be done at the “genius bars” on their official shops, authorized resellers and service centers.

Apple repairs have been infamous for their high costs coupled with long turnarounds.

Tech repair giant iFixit welcomed the change, saying “We never thought we’d see the day,” in a tweet, and added that everyone is enough of a “genius” to repair an iPhone.

“were [sic] thrilled to see Apple admit what we’ve always known: Everyone’s enough of a Genius to fix an iPhone,” iFixit added.

Initially, Apple’s new Self Service Repair program will start in the United States, and will be rolled out to other countries next year.

The program currently covers repairs to iPhones 12 and 13, wherein Apple will be offering to sell parts and tools to people who wish to repair the said gadgets on their own.

Moreover, the Self Repair program will initially focus on common problems and those prone to damage such as batteries, cameras, and screens.

The extension of the program next year will include Mac computers. (GFB)
