Representatives from the Philippine labor, employer, and government sectors recently united at the 2023 National Tripartite Conference to champion the Philippine Labor and Employment Plan (PLEP) 2023-2028. Held in Pasay City from November 16-17, the conference stressed the need for teamwork to meet the country’s labor goals.

DOLE Secretary and NTC Chairperson Bienvenido E. Laguesma highlighted the value of collaboration, aligning with the government’s vision for an inclusive and responsible ‘Bagong Pilipinas’.

A key outcome was the adoption of the NTC resolution, solidifying the commitment to PLEP 2023-2028. This commitment goes beyond words, with plans for an oversight committee under the National Tripartite Industrial Peace Council to monitor PLEP’s implementation, ensuring that labor policies adapt to the changing work landscape.

The conference focused on strategic areas of PLEP, aiming to enhance productive, rewarding, and sustainable job opportunities. Plans include aligning workforce skills with industry needs, supporting small businesses affected by international trade, and reviewing labor code provisions to protect workers’ rights.

In the realm of social protection, the commitment involves streamlining systems, involving the private sector, and creating specific policies. A crucial step is the establishment of a social protection floor, ensuring a comprehensive approach to inclusive social protection.

This collaborative effort, endorsed by the President and Cabinet, marks a significant step toward a more inclusive labor landscape in the Philippines. As the tripartite partners begin this journey, the focus remains on concrete actions and shared responsibilities to turn promises into reality. (ASC)
