Nokia has taken the wraps off its first Android-based handset at Mobile World Congress. Introducing the new Nokia X family – the Nokia X, the Nokia X+ and the Nokia XL.

The first device, the Nokia X is a mid-range handset. It comes with a 4-inch screen with a resolution of 800×480 pixels. The phone has 3MP rear camera, weighs 129 grams and packs a 1500mAh battery.

The second device, the Nokia X+ has the same basic specifications but will come with more memory and storage and the addition of an SD card slot. The Nokia X+ is optimized for multimedia enthusiasts, who can enjoy even more games, music, photos and video.

Meanwhile, the Nokia XL will come with a 5-inch display, a 5MP rear camera with LED flash and a 2-megapixel front facing camera.

Nokia has said that the phones are aimed at emerging markets and that it hopes to “connect the next billion” smartphone users to the internet.

“Nokia has connected billions of people around the world, and today we demonstrated how our portfolio is designed to connect the next billion people to great experiences,” commented Stephen Elop, executive vice president of Nokia’s devices and services division at Microsoft.

“Our deliberate approach is to offer four tiers of products including our affordable entry-level devices like the new Nokia 220; our entry-level Asha touch phones like the new Nokia Asha 230; our new Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL smartphones primarily for growth economies; and our Lumia portfolio, which is where we introduce the greatest innovation and provide full compatibility with the Microsoft experience,” he added.

Nokia also revealed that Nokia X isn’t just the name of the phone – it is also the name of the mashed-up operating system.

Nokia X uses Android 4.1 as its bedrock, but the operating system pulls in elements of Windows Phone 8 and Nokia’s budget operating system Asha.

According to Nokia, the operating system is still close enough to stock Android that it will be able to use Android apps. However, it will not have access to the Google Play store.

The Nokia X will go on sale immediately in Asia-Pacific, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. The X+ and XL will go on sale sometime in the second quarter of 2014.

Both the Nokia X and X+ will be available in bright green, bright red, cyan, yellow, black and white. The Nokia XL will be available in bright green, orange, cyan, yellow, black and white.

The entire Nokia X range is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core processor and supports dual SIM.

The prices range from Php 5500 to Php 6700.
