Meta Announces Messenger Lite’s Shutdown

The favorite messaging app of budget smartphone users, Meta’s Messenger Lite, will be shutting down in September, tech news website 9to5Google reported.

According to the report, the heavily favored app by many will not be available for use after September 18. 9to5Google added that when the app is opened after it’s shut down, users will be met with a message urging them to use the main messenger app instead. Moreover, people who attempt to download the app after the shutdown won’t be able to see the app on the Google Play Store.

Meta confirmed the planned shutdown with TechCrunch.

“Starting August 21, people using the Messenger Lite app for Android will be directed to Messenger or FB Lite to send and receive messages on Messenger,” a Meta spokesperson told the tech news website.

This adds to the changes the Messenger will be undertaking in September, the Android users also won’t be able to use the app as their main SMS messaging app in the latter part of September. (GFB)
