Google Unveils AI Chatbot Tool ‘Bard’ to Compete with ChatGPT

Google has launched a new AI-powered chatbot tool called “Bard”, aimed at competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

In a blog post, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that Bard will be available to trusted testers starting Monday, with plans to release it to the public in the near future. Like ChatGPT, Bard is based on a large language model, trained on vast amounts of online data to generate responses to user prompts.

The announcement comes as Google’s primary product, online search, is facing a significant risk from the rise of AI and the popularity of ChatGPT.

Microsoft, which is investing billions in OpenAI, is rumored to be incorporating ChatGPT into some of its products and possibly even into its search engine, Bing. Microsoft is set to hold a news event at its headquarters on Tuesday, but the topic is yet to be announced.

The technology behind Bard, Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), was unveiled two years ago and has been in the news lately after a former Google engineer claimed it was “sentient”.

Google offered an example of how Bard can be used, showing a user asking it to explain new discoveries by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope in a way that a 9-year-old might understand. Bard responded with conversational bullet points, demonstrating its ability to communicate complex information in an easily digestible format. Pichai also stated that AI-powered features will soon be rolled out on Google’s Search tool.

However, experts have warned that these chatbot tools, trained on online data, have the potential to spread misinformation and perpetuate biases. Pichai stressed the importance of introducing these models to the world in a responsible manner.
