Citizen-led Sustainability Initiative Re-launching Popular Site on New .Earth Domain

Tokyo — A citizen-led sustainability initiative aimed at tracking Earth’s “vital signs” is re-launching its popular site – co2now.org – on the new .earth top level domain (TLD). CO2.earth will become the site’s permanent web address. Beginning on November 19, the .earth domain extension will become publicly available for registration via all the major domain registrars.

Making the switch from a .org domain was an easy decision for the site’s founder, Michael McGee: “The CO2.earth name perfectly communicates the focus and scope of the data delivery work I’ve been doing since 2007,” he said. “Our home planet is changing rapidly, yet there’s too much climate information around for most people to know what’s useful and what to do with it. CO2.earth puts all the important data in one place, providing tools and insights to empower people with knowledge and understanding.”

Launching in tandem with CO2.earth will be show.earth, a companion site that will provide a collection of interactive, informative widgets that anyone can add to their own sites.

The .earth TLD is designed to be a platform to enable global citizens to share their voices for the betterment of society and enrichment of life on Earth. Tadashi Yokoyama, president of Interlink Co., Ltd., which is the Registry Operator for .earth domains, is committed to seeing that the TLD remains true to its purpose. “As part of the registration Terms and Conditions, registrants will take a voluntary pledge to become ambassadors for Earth and do away with actions that harm our home planet and its inhabitants,” he commented.

The general availability registration period for .earth domains officially opens on November 19 at 16:00 UTC. With the launch date still a week away, several top domain registration service providers are taking paid pre-registrations. Organizations, webmasters and hobbyists interested in acquiring a .earth domain name can put their request in early with global registrars such as 101domain, Gandi.net, GoDaddy.com, Hexonet (1API), Name.com, United Domains and many others.
