Apple has dethroned Samsung as the world’s leading smartphone seller, marking the end of Samsung’s 12-year dominance according to stats.

This comes as data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) revealed that Apple secured the top spot in 2023, having sold 234.6 million units, claiming a 20.1% market share.

In contrast, Samsung trailed with 226.6 million units and a 19.4% market share. Analysts attribute Apple’s ascent to the success of its premium devices, particularly the iPhone.

Meanwhile, the smartphone industry’s fragmentation, influenced by rivals like Xiaomi, Honor, and Google in the Android market, also played a role in the spot of Samsung.

Moreover, Huawei’s strong performance in China impacted Samsung’s global sales.

Global smartphone shipments experienced a 3.2% decline to 1.17 billion units in 2023, according to IDC, although a recovery is anticipated in 2024 based on growth observed in the latter half of the year. (GFB)
