Apple and Google Finally Deliver Encrypted RCS Messaging Across Platforms

In a major win for cross-platform communication, Apple and Google have rolled out end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging between iPhones and Android devices. The feature launched with iOS 26.5 on May 11, 2026, and is now available in the latest Google Messages app.

Encrypted chats now sport a lock icon, ensuring neither company nor carriers can access your messages in transit. It’s powered by the GSMA’s RCS Universal Profile 3.0 and the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol. Both sender and receiver need compatible software and carrier support—U.S. users on AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon are good to go right away.

This caps years of work: Apple added basic RCS in iOS 18 (2024), but encryption took until now. “We’re starting to roll out end-to-end encryption for RCS between Android and iPhone users!” Google Android chief Sameer Samat posted on X.

Rollout is gradual and U.S.-focused for now, with international support expanding. For privacy fans, it’s a game-changer—native secure texting without ditching your default apps.
