Regional Children’s Contest Cap 23rd National Children’s Month

Day Care children from different cities and municipalities in Central Visayas showcased their wits and talents in the 2015 Regional Children’s Contest held recently at SM City Cebu.

The contest culminated the 23rd National Children’s Month (NCM) celebration.

Johann Beleña of Cebu City impressed the audience with his rendition of an ABBA classic pop song “I Have a Dream” and finished first place in the singing category.

Angellian Nudalo of Mandaue City and Ricardo Sevillijo Jr. of Dumaguete City finished second and third in the same category, respectively.
Kids also showcased their creative side and their gift of gab for the draw & tell category.

James Arthur Erequero from Naga City bested other 18 kids and emerged first place after a rousing, yet heartfelt speech on the welfare of children.

Michaela Vasquez of Dumaguete City, second place and Jea Abayle of Barili, Cebu third place.

Thirteen contingents also showed off their dancing prowess in the Folk Dance category.

Contingent from the Municipality of San Fernando representing the Province of Cebu was declared the grand champion for their dance called “Tiklos”. The dance interpret the Filipino spirit of Bayanihan in the rural setting.

The second place and third place went to Cebu City and Mandaue City, respectively.

All winners received cash prizes and certificates of recognition. Non-winning contestants also received consolation prizes.

The event also aims to raise awareness of the public on the positive effects of children experiencing psycho-social-spiritual stimulations in Day Care Centers.

Meanwhile, the winners of the search for child-friendly cities and municipalities were also declared on the same event.

Based on the year 2014 audit, the winners are Cebu City for the highly urbanized city category, Canlaon City for the component city category, Municipality of Talibon for the 1st class to 3rd class municipality category and the Municipality of Balilihan for the 4th class to 6th class municipality category.

Previously, the NCM is celebrated in October but starting this year, the NCM shall be celebrated in the month of November, pursuant to Republic Act 10661 series of 2015.

The new law commemorates the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by the United Nations General Assembly on November 20, 1989 and seeks to instill its significance in the Filipino consciousness. (PR – Kerwin Macopia)
