Kuala Lumpur (PNA/Bernama) — As Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) chairman, Malaysia needs to hold an emergency meeting to get a consensus among ASEAN countries to end the violence and discrimination against the Rohingyas in Myanmar.

This was proposed by Senator Datuk Boon Som Inong, who also believed that immediate measures should be taken to protect the good name of ASEAN member countries and the region, which were known as safe zones, independent and impartial.

He also expressed concern over the killing and oppression of the Rohingyas reportedly by Buddhist leaders in Myanmar.

“As leader of the Buddhist-majority Siamese community in this country, I am worried the spread of images on the incident in the social media will misrepresent Buddhism and its believers,” he said in a statement here today.

He thanked the Malaysian government which helped thousands of Rohingya refugees recently.
