Koronadal City (PNA) — “I cannot allow immorality to thrive in an institution which aims to reform law offenders.”

With this statement, South Cotabato Gov. Daisy Avance Fuentes has shot down calls by inmates to allow their “live-in” partners to visit them inside the South Cotabato provincial detention and rehabilitation center here.

Fuentes also directed the South Cotabato provincial rehabilitation and detention facility officials to regulate conjugal visits for inmates.

Speaking over DXOM Radyo Bida Koronadal, Fuentes stressed that conjugal visits should only be allowed to legal spouses of inmate.

Fuentes said she will not allow immorality to thrive in the provincial detention facility since it aimed to rehabilitate crime offenders.

She was referring to reports that “illegal wives” have been allowed to visit detainees during conjugal visits.

On several occasions, commotion ensued inside the jail facility when the first and original wife visited her detained husband only to find “another girl” with him.

Earlier, Fuentes rejected the appeal of about 70 inmates that their “live in partners” be allowed to visit the jail compound.

“For humanitarian consideration, we ask Gov. Fuentes to allow our partners to visit us even once a month,” the inmates said.

Acting provincial warden Juan Lanzaderas earlier rejected the same requests by inmates.

Solima Rodriguez said since the warden regulated the visit, she have not seen her live-in partner for about two months.

“We are not married but we have been living together for years until he was accused of a crime he did not commit,” she told reporters.

Last year, she recalled, she regularly visit her partner she only identified as “Rene.”

Visitors, especially spouses, should present documents they were the legitimate and legal spouse of the inmate they are to visit. (PNA) FFC/NYP/EOF
