DOH To Set Up Medical Stations In 2016 Voting Centers

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) and the Department of Health will partner for the set-up and and operation of medical assistance stations for the May 09, 2016 National and Local Elections in voting centers all over the country.

In a meeting held recently by COMELEC Chairman Andres Bautista and DOH Secretary Janette Garin, the proposed setting up of medical assistance stations was discussed.

The proposed medical assistance stations will provide basic first-aid and essential medicines to voters and government personnel performing election-related duties in voting centers where health risks are considerably higher due to long lines and exposure to heat during the summer month of May.

“This is the first time the Commission is partnering with DOH so we are really grateful for the support of Sec. Garin. This initiative is again part of our effort to improve the voting experience. As you know, summer has probably kicked in by May. The heat combined with the throng of people in voting centers can cause heat stroke, among other illnesses. We just want to have quick-response teams in place in case we need first-aid medical care,” said Bautista.

The DOH will cover the costs of the set-up and operation of the proposed medical assistance stations, as well as the hospitalization expenses of any government personnel who may succumb to illness or serious injury in their line of work on Election Day. Link-ups between the medical stations and nearby hospitals and health centers will also be established to send emergency medical response units should the need arise.

The COMELEC and DOH will finalize plans in time for the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement before the end of February. (COMELEC)
