DepEd Gives Go Signal for Remote Classes Due to Extreme Heat

With extreme heat being experienced now in the Philippines, students in the country have suffered heat exhaustion inside their schools, according to reports.

The Department of Education (DepEd) gave the go signal to public schools to allow the shift to alternative delivery modes (ADMs) or online or modular classes if the classroom setup is no longer conducive due to extreme heat.

DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa said in a Viber message that there are no sufficient funds for schools to install air conditioning in all classrooms.

DepEd along with the national government has already considered reverting to the old school calendar when school breaks are scheduled every April to May, the period in which temperatures are high due to the dry season.

Reverting to Pre-Pandemic School Break Schedule

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said on April 24, that the government is studying the proposal in reverting to the pre-pandemic school calendar when school breaks were scheduled every March.

To recall, the school calendar was drastically changed when COVID-19 hit the country.

During the lockdowns earlier in 2020, classes were suspended but returned months later with the introduction of module lessons and online classes.

In 2022, face-to-face classes returned but with a new school calendar implemented, moving the school break to every June and July. (ASC)
