Forty-nine-year old Glenda Villarojo could not hold back her tears when she saw Provincial Capitol and Dumanjug town officials visit Barangay Tangil to extend comfort and aid to the displaced families after a fire hit the village last December.

Nakahilak ko sa akong kalipay nga naa gyuy nagpakabana sa among kahimtang diri human mi na sunogi,” said Villarojo, who was among the 26 families who received P5,000 cash assistance from the municipal government of Dumanjug.

She said her world caved in after her house, along with 11 others, was razed down by a blaze two days before the New Year’s celebration.

“Mura og na minusan akong kaguol sa mga tabang na nadawat nako,” said Villarojo.

Tangil barangay chairman Hermela Dupal-ag said the estimated damage costs around P3 million.

Aside from financial assistance, the fire survivors also received construction materials such as tin sheets, lumbers, nails and sacks of cement from 7th District Congressman Peter John Calderon and Dumanjug Councilor Allan Quirante.

The Provincial Government through Provincial Board members Christopher Baricuatro and Jerome Librando distributed relief goods, cooking utensils as well as mats, blankets and mosquito nets.

Gov. Hilario P. Davide III and Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale promised that the Capitol would also extend P100,000 in financial assistance for the restoration of the households’ water system.

To help the fire victims’ children cope up with their school needs, Calderon said he will give each family P3,000 aid for their high school students and P5,000 for those studying in college.

Mayor Efren “Gungun” Gica thanked Capitol officials for the assistance as well as Calderon who went to the Department of Interior and Local Government to ask for a new fire truck for the town. (Kelvin Canizares)
