Selected pupils from public elementary and secondary schools in this city can benefit from the two-day exclusive clinic that will be conducted by players of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) on June 12 and 14.

“We are giving a chance to 100 selected elementary and secondary public school students to attend the two-day volleyball clinic with our volleyball superstars and as well as our national coaches for them to learn new skills,” said Moises Salomon Jr., officer-in-charge of the Iloilo City Youth and Sports Division in a press conference held at the City Hall media lounge on Monday.

In the same press conference, local organizer Rodolfo Villaruz said for the first time, the PVL will hold its first out-of-town game at the University of San Agustin (USA) gym in this city on June 15.

“It is an official game between defending champion Creamline Cool Smashers and Banko Perlas. It is a joint project with the city government,” Villaruz said.

He said that it will be a “great game” since the tournament is going to be part of their official game.

Among the players who will be joining in the tournament are Alyssa Valdez and Michele Gumabao for Creamline Smashers and former UP Lady Fighting Maroons star Nicole Tiamzon for Banko Perlas.

Prior to the tournament, they will be holding a whole-day clinic at Barangay Fundidor gym on June 12 and at Puerto Real in La Paz district on June 14.

Most of the pupils will come from I. Arroyo Elementary School (ES); La Paz ES, Sto. Niño Sur ES, and Iloilo City National High School. These schools produce volleyball players who compete in regional and even national events.

“Iloilo City government is always in full support of this kind of program. We are aligning this type of program to our sports program in the city to develop and discover potential athletes to be our future volleyball players,” Salomon added.

He said local players need more exposure to showcase their talents and get discovered in the future where big opportunities are waiting for them.

Meantime, Villaruz said that around 80 percent of the tickets for the weekend game is out in the market. The event at 4 p.m. will be covered live over ABS-CBN sports channel.

Those who are interested to purchase tickets may get in touch with the Iloilo Sports and Youth Development Office and Army Navy store. (PNA)
