Typhoon ‘Karen’ Leaves PHP53.48M Agri Damage in Baler

Baler, Aurora — Damage to agriculture brought by Typhoon Karen when it made landfall Sunday in this capital town of Aurora has reached PHP53.48 million according to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).

Gabriel Llave, MDRRMO chief, said that some PHP52,474,454 worth of palay crops was devastated by the typhoon in a1,076.25 hectares of land, affecting some 672 farmers here.

Llave also said the onslaught of typhoon Karen caused damage to 14.35 hectares of corn farmlands with an estimated PHP874,415 loss.

He said the livestock sector has an initial damage worth some PHP135,250.

“Assessment on damage to fisheries and others are still on going and figures in agriculture might still go up upon completion,” Llave said in an interview.

Despite this, Llave said it would not cause any shortage of supply for domestic consumption. (PNA) JMC/ZST/JDA
