Laoag City (PNA) –Typhoon “Lando” destroyed some Php 2.6-million worth of rice and corn crops and about Php 1-million in infrastructure in Ilocos Norte over the weekend, the Provincial|Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Resiliency Council (PDRRMRC) reported Tuesday.

According to Marcel Tabije of the PDRRMRC, rice grains which are due for harvesting were blown away by the strong winds brought by “Lando.”

Reported damage in rice worth Php 2.4 million were from Laoag City while corn were reportedly from the towns of Dingras, Badoc, Bagui, and Piddig.

“Though there were no heavy rains in Ilocos Norte, the strong winds have caused the loss of the rice grains, “Tabije said.

Some rice fields in Laoac village in Paoay town here also suffered from floods caused by water coming from Quiaoit River.

According to Brgy. Chairman Evelyn Galano, the village was one of the low lying areas in Ilocos Norte where waters from the upland rivers flowed to Paoay that caused the village to experience flooding.

Aside from the crops, the PDRRMRC has recorded an estimated damage on irrigation system worth Php50,000.

The municipal halls in Burgos and Pagudpud were also reported damaged.

At the height of typhoon Lando, road going to Adams, Ilocos Norte located in Pancian, Pagudpud here was impassable to all types of vehicles since Saturday due to landslide. Clearing operation is yet to be completed because of the unlikely weather.

All other roads here are still passable and in good condition.

Ilocos Norte, unlike other provinces in Region 1, has experienced lighter effect of Typhoon Lando with moderate to strong winds and intermittent light rains during the weekend.

The PDRRMRC is still closely monitoring the typhoon as it moves farther from the province.

“The province gives timely update of the typhoon condition to the public, ensuring their safety,” Tabije said.

He said the province hoped that Typhoon Lando would spare Ilocos Norte from strong winds and rains until it totally leaves the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Sunday. (PNA) FPV/CDG/EDS
