The Significance of Flores de Mayo

Published

on

One of the most glorious and sacred events in the country celebrated during the month of May is called Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May).

Flores de Mayo is a parade of the town’s loveliest ladies depicting the search and discovery of Jesus Christ’s Cross by Queen Helena and Constantine to glorify the Virgin Mother Mary.

According to National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA), this festivity was first introduced by the Spanish friars in 1854.

After some 10 years, Flores de Mayo blossomed in the various towns of Bulacan, Laguna, Batangas and Pampanga and is celebrated in the entire month of May.

Such religious organizations like Daughters of Isabela, Knights of Columbus, Solidarity and Adoracion Nocturna, go in groups to offer flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Flores de Mayo highlights a procession honoring Virgin Mary. Coinciding with it is the Santacruzan, re-enacting the search of Queen Elena for the cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified.

Flores de Mayo is significant and a chance for Filipino Christians to pray and meditate upon the Blessed Virgin Mary’s infinite values. (PNA) LAM/JAA-OJT
