Tanods to Still Receive Cash from Capitol Until Age 65

Tanods who became senior citizens may still continue to serve and receive cash incentives from the provincial government. Governor Hilario Davide III and Vice Governor Agnes Magpale announced the suspension of age limit set for the receipt of Capitol’s cash incentives in Pinamungahan last November 24.

The governor said this was in response to the clamor of the tanods who brought it up with him through their respective mayors. The new policy, which postpones the retirement age of tanods from 60 to 65, will take effect next year.

Governor Davide and Vice Gov Magpale continued the annual distribution of incentives to the barangay workers in Talisay City last November 26. There are around 363 barangay health workers (BHW), 23 barangay nutrition scholars (BNS), 34 day care workers (DCW), and 378 tanods in the city.

Each BHW, BNS, and DCW receives Php 2,400 while every tanod gets Php 1,500. Ricardo Elcallado, 60, of Barangay Manipis, Talisay City, heaved a sigh of relief, after finding his name on the list of recipients for this year. He said this was an early Christmas gift for him amidst doubt about his status. “Karon gani wala nako nagdahom nga makadawat pa, niari lang jud ko. Samot nakong wala nagdahom nga patas-an diay ang (I have doubts if I am still qualified to receive the cash incentive. I just came here. It did not occur to me even at once that they have stretched the) age limit,” said Elcallado, who just joined the senior citizens club last September. Elcallado, a father of eight children, has served as tanod since the 70s, where no incentives or honorarium were given yet.

He said the younger tanods were a bit lucky these days. Yet, he said, they must be able to display the same zeal and dedication to their work. Last year, some tanods were not able to receive cash incentives because they were not in the master list. They were above the 60-year old limit set by the Capitol. Apart from the Capitol, the barangay and municipality also gives honorarium or incentives to the barangay workers. In the case of Manipis, the barangay gives Php 500 monthly honorarium to each of their tanod.
