Tacloban City (PNA) — The city government here lighted a 70-feet high Christmas tree at the city hall ground Tuesday night, with colors resembling the French flag.

Mayor Alfred Romualdez said that Christmas tree, occupying an eight meter area near the city hall, uses the colors of France’s flag as tribute to those who perish during the terrorist attack in Paris last month.

This is also a way for the city to acknowledge the French government for hosting the climate change summit this week.

Witnessing the occasion was French Ambassador to the Philippines Thierry Mathou, who came to the city to tour the Yolanda memorials in Anibong district and City Convention Center ground.

“We build this Christmas tree here in our city to share our grief and also to honor those who died in the tragedy that happened in Paris. We also commend your President for creating a strong awareness on climate change,” Romualdez said in his speech.

The mayor also expressed support to the French government in their campaign of fight against terrorism.

Mathou assures that France will always support the Philippines in the fight against climate change.

“I want to assure you that you are not alone, France is with and all other countries. You have many friends in the world,” Mathou said.

He added that looking for solution in solving problem on climate change must be done by all. (PNA) FFC/SQM/RTA/EGR
