The San Miguel Corporation (SMC) teams up with global dredging contractor Boskalis to start-up preparations for the upcoming Manila International Airport (MIA) in Bulacan. The USD1.73 billion was awarded to Boskalis and the airport is set to take off in the first quarter of 2021.

The mentioned airport is said to be the most modern and largest international gateway in the country.

“Our selection of a global giant in dredging shows how ready, willing, and committed we are to do everything necessary to make sure this airport project is developed properly and sustainably,” said Ramon Ang, SMC President, and Chief Operating Officer.

Ang explained that after Boskalis was chosen, they had to undergo strategic selection since the selection process includes many international dredging contractors.

Ang added that Boskalis is the most suitable for the project and it will be designed to the highest infrastructure standards.

Meanwhile, Boskalis CEO Peter Berdowski said that being chosen as the airport’s contractor is “fantastic news”.

“The confirmation of this project of this scale is fantastic news. As Boskalis, we have a rich tradition in creating land all over the world to the highest technical and environmental standards,” Berdowski said.

Dubbed as the “game-changer” for the Philippine economy, the Manila International Airport is expected to decongest Manila’s air traffic, boost the country’s tourism, and generate more jobs, especially for people who are greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. (MLC)
