SIM Registration in PH Begins

Published

on

The first day of registering Subscriber Identity Module (SIMs) in the country has now commenced, albeit with glitches and server issues that plagued the process.

This comes as the respective websites of both telecommunication companies Globe and Smart Communications for the SIM registration were down as early as before 7:00 a.m., showing a “Bad Gateway” prompt, despite both companies continuously saying that they were ready for the flock of registrants.

According to Globe in social media replies, users should access the website at a later time.

Smart Communications downplayed the problem, with PLDT-Smart’s first vice president and corporate communications head Cathy Yang saying during an interview with CNN Philippines’ “The Source” that the reported high traffic was “great news,” meaning many are eager to have their SIMs registered.

Yang also pleaded for patience from the registrants as Smart moves to increase the capacity of the website.

Subscribers of DITO Telecommunity Corporation, however, reported ease of registering through the service provider’s app, with some subscribers lauding the smoothness of the process of registering.

According to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), issues regarding SIM registrations may arise in its first couple of weeks.

Mobile phone subscribers using prepaid SIM cards shall register within a 180-day period from December 27, 2022. After which, SIMs that were not registered will be deactivated and will only be given a grace period of five days to be registered and reactivated, according to the SIM Registration Act’s implementing rules and regulations.

Postpaid users will only have to verify the details they have presented to their service providers.
