Russia Warns Conflict Could Escalate to World War III

Russia is now saying that the conflict could escalate to World War III as the West convenes in Germany to further arm Ukraine as the invasion continues in the Eastern part of the country.

This comes as the Russian invasion has triggered overwhelming support from Western nations to Ukraine to help the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) aspirant combat the invasion, with a NATO defense meeting at a U.S. airbase in Germany Tuesday for Ukraine defense talks in Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday, April 24, 2022, where Austin said that the U.S. wanted to see a “weakened” Russia, and pledged to move “heaven and Earth” to help Ukraine win the war.

“We want to see Russia weakened to a degree that it can’t do the kinds of things that it has done in invading Ukraine,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in a TV interview with Russia’s Channel One, warned the West ahead of the NATO defense meeting in Germany to not underestimate the heightened risks of a broader nuclear conflict over Ukraine as he said that NATO was “in essence” engaging in a proxy war with Russia due to its continues shipment of arms directly being used for combat.

Moreover, Lavrov said that what Russia was doing was upholding the principle of striving to prevent a nuclear conflict at all costs, calling it their “key position.”

“This is our key position on which we base everything. The risks now are considerable,” Lavrov said.

This marks a significant shift in rhetoric from Russia as fears mount that Russian President Vladimir Putin might resort to using tactical or other limited nuclear weapon options in Ukraine if Russia continues to have setbacks in its invasion of the country. (GFB)
