Realizing the significance of empowering the Persons with Disabilities, Sugbufé secures a percentage of the workforce for PWDs within the restaurant.

During Sugbufé’s grand opening last September 10, 2016, a representative from DSWD and the City of Mandaue were presented with a donation in order to sustain the livelihood and vocational programs for the hearing impaired women of Mandaue City. In addition, Ms. Ella E. Saguin, the Managing Partner of Sugbufé stated that the restaurant is open to accepting PWDs as part of their workforce in order for the latter to be empowered with the chance to live a life free of discrimination.

In an article released by Rappler.com last December 7, 2011, they stated that “the World Health Organization and the World Bank noted that people with disabilities across the world have poorer health outcomes, lower education achievements, less economic participation, and higher rates of poverty than people without disabilities.” In a Discussion Paper Series published by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies, only less than 10 percent are wage employed out of 100,000 employable PWDs that are registered in Department of Labor and Employment or DOLE.

Under Republic Act 7277, Title 2, Chapter 1 Section 5 it is stated that no disabled persons shall be denied access to opportunities for suitable employment. A qualified disabled employee shall be subject to the same terms and conditions of employment and the same compensation, privileges, benefits, fringe benefits, incentives or allowances as a qualified able-bodied person.

The restaurant values the importance of diversity, equality and equity among people most especially towards the PWDs as this is one of their supported advocacies. “We only wish to help uplift the circumstances that PWDs go through. In the end, we’re all brothers and sisters in Christ. We should help one another instead of bringing each other down because of our differences.” said Ms. Saguin.
