Governor Hilario P. Davide III, Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale and 7th district Congressman Peter John Calderon inaugurated more than P26 million worth of infrastructure projects in Ginatilan town, southwest Cebu on Tuesday.

The infrastructure projects include a P22 million road widening and concreting in Barangay Mangaco, an upper village whose residents are mostly farmers, and two multi-purpose centers in the barangays of Anao and Poblacion.

Constructed at over P2 million each, the multi-purpose centers can be used as evacuation shelters and can host public gatherings such as graduation ceremonies, and fiesta activities, among others.

The infrastructure projects in Ginatilan were made through the collaboration of Congressman Calderon and the Cebu Provincial Government.

“Ang maayong karsada timaan nga ang usa ka lugar milambo. Kami sa provincial government ug ni Congressman Calderon dili mohunong sa among mga paningkamot aron mahatagan og tinuoray nga serbisyo ang katawhan sa lalawigan,” Davide said.

Mangaco Barangay Captain Loreto Balansag could find no words to describe his happiness.

“Mora nig milagro ang nahitabo sa among barangay,” Balansag said, adding that the cemented road would ease the farmers’ travel in bringing their harvest to the town center.

The 2.2-kilometer road stretches from lower Mangaco to Sitio Tulawgan. Calderon promised to give additional P5 million next year to extend it farther.

“Ang gobyerno mangita og mga pamaagi aron molambo ang panginabuhi sa mga tawo. Ug kaning inyong karsada nagpakita nga atong gobyerno nagpakanaba sa panginahanglanon sa kabus,” Calderon said.

The 7th district Congressman emphasized the importance of unity—from the national government down to the barangay—in order to bring progress easily to the people.

“If we are united, the best will come. It is imperative that all stakeholders complement each other,” he said.

For her part, Magpale said that the Davide administration works hard to make inclusive growth trickle down to the marginalized sector.

“This may be the era of infrastructure but what I’m sure of is that this is the era of satisfying the needs of the Cebuanos especially the poor and those living in far-flung areas,” she said.

For progress to be meaningful, Magpale said, it should be felt by the underprivileged.

“Walay layo nga barangay nga dili namo sak-on ug baktason sa gobernador haron paghatod sa serbisyo sa probinsiya kay ang kalambuan sa matag sugbuanon magsugod sa kabus,” she added.

Distribution of armchairs

Aside from the inauguration of projects, the group also led the distribution of 1,150 plastic armchairs to different elementary and high schools in Ginatilan, Badian and Moalboal towns.

“One of the best ways to improve and make our educational system effective is to make the students comfortable. This can be achieved by providing the school with facilities such as classrooms conducive for study and armchairs,” Davide said in his speech in Badian National High School.

This year, the provincial government is targeting the construction of at least 60 school buildings that has two classrooms aside from giving school supplies to kindergarten up to grade 6 pupils, which started last week in Consolacion town.

Magpale, on the other hand, described the day as a “happy journey” since it allowed her to visit remote areas and meet teachers and students who are close to her heart being a former professor.

“Being in public service, every day is always a day to remember and an opportunity to serve the people particularly the poor,” she said.

Also present during the Tuesday’s activities were Provincial Board Members Christopher Baricuatro and Jerome Librando, both representatives of the 7th district.
