The Regional Nutrition Council (RNC) approved the Regional Resolution concerning “Fad Diets” that are becoming very popular in the advent of social media and the internet.

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) with the Regional Nutrition Council (RNC) does not recommend “fad diets” as they are not backed with sufficient evidence and may have possible lasting health risks and dietary problems.

Fad diets also known as crash diets are similar to fashion or a trend but are dietary regimens that promotes rapid weight loss and health improvements. Fad diets consist of unusual food combinations and restrictive food intakes that promises great results when followed strictly.

According to NNC and RNC, fad diets claim to have dramatic results in a short period of time, but have no sufficient evidence that they actually work. Fad diets can lead to imbalanced nutritional intake which can lead to health risks.

Some fad diets consist of low calorie intake which leads the metabolism to slow down that results to weight loss. However, according to several studies, the short duration of these diets frequently results in greater possibilities of weight gain.

In a press release by NNC, they recommend the adherence to a holistic, sustainable, adequate, and nutritionally-balanced diet, complemented by an active lifestyle and lifelong behavioral modifications.

Following a short and limiting dietary regime is medically unsuitable and unsustainable as it leads to poor dietary adherence and long-term behavioral change. Hence, the dietetic advice still recommends safe, healthy, and holistic dietary, exercise, and behavioral plan in order to achieve desirable weight loss and improvement in overall health.

Moreover, it is still best to consult advice from a registered nutritionist-dietitian, licensed physical therapists, and lifestyle physicians.
