Washington (PNA/Sputnik) — A new synthetic killer drug known as “flakka” is spreading rapidly across the United States and already causing an epidemic of overdose fatalities and acts of violence, U.S. media reported.

“It’s a new drug. And it’s a killer,” the Kansas City Star reported on Monday.

Known as “flakka” the synthetic drug is spreading to multiple U.S. states and “causing a rash of emergency room visits and overdose deaths,” media reported.

In one case in Florida case, a person who had reported taking flakka gnawed on and disfigured the face of another man before he was shot dead by police, the newspaper reported.

In another incident in Florida, a man impaled himself while trying to climb a fence around a police station.

“This is the worst drug I have ever seen in my 18 years of law enforcement across the board,” Johnny Bivens, sheriff of Lewis County, Kentucky, told the newspaper. “Nothing compares to this.”

The drug is also referred to as alpha-PVP, and has a similar chemical makeup to drugs known as “bath salts.”

The drug is usually illegally marketed in a white or pink crystalline form and is foul-smelling and can be eaten, snorted, injected, or vaporized in an electronic cigarette device, according to the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse. (PNA/Sputnik) JBP/SSC
