China’s National Health Commission reported 57 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on the Chinese mainland Saturday, with local transmissions reaching as high as 38 cases along with 19 imported cases.

The Commission further claimed in its daily report that 36 of the transmitted cases were located in Beijing, and two in Liaoning Province, according to reports from Xinhua News.

In response to the sudden rise in COVID-19 cases, the Chinese government closed down the largest wholesale food market in Beijing with police guarding the area along with locking down 11 residential communities near the said market after the sharp spike in COVID-19 cases in the capital.

These actions were part of a quick response measure, learning from the first wave of the virus that greatly affected the country for months at the beginning of 2020.

This brings the overall COVID-19 confirmed cases on the mainland to 83,132 as of Saturday with 78, 369 recoveries and 4,634 deaths.

129 still being treated as of this writing. (GFB)
