Mobile Application to Help Reduce Electricity Costs

Published

on

The Department of Trade and Industry and the German government are supporting the development of a mobile application that will enable local businesses to lower their electric bills by as much as forty percent (40%) per month.

DTI is cooperating with the German government, through its international cooperation company, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ), to replicate Germany’s success in achieving economic growth while protecting its environment.

The app, called OneWatt, will work round the clock to pick out the most cost-efficient energy source at various times of the day and to find alternative power sources during outages. The energy efficiency app was the grand prize winner in the contest held recently by DTI and GIZ for a mobile app that would best help local small and medium-sized enterprises become more competitive and environment friendly.

The other winning apps were for natural resource management, waste recycling, green packaging, and disaster management.

It was developed by a team of Filipino IT professionals from the University of the Philippines Diliman and De La Salle University, led by Kristine Quirante.

GIZ’s Promotion of Green Economic Development (ProGED) project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, will support the full development and commercialization of the app among SMEs all over the country through DTI. (DTI)
