Migrant Crisis could Undermine Idea of United Europe

Ankara (PNA/Sputnik) — Problems stemming from the EU migrant crisis could be detrimental to the idea of a united Europe, German Labor and Social Affairs Minister Andrea Nahles said Thursday.

She also criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s statement that the refugee crisis was Germany’s problem.

According to Nahles, up to 460,000 refugees will receive social aid in Germany this year, adding that Berlin plans to spend up to 3.3 billion euro (USD 3.7 billion) on integrating them into German society.

Europe is experiencing a massive migration crisis, as thousands of people attempt to cross into the bloc, fleeing violence in their home countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

In order to tackle the crisis, the European Commission has proposed to introduce a mandatory quota system to relocate and resettle migrants within the bloc, but it has faced opposition from several EU states.

On September 9, the Commission is expected to announce its proposals for a permanent mechanism to ensure “a fair distribution” of refugees among the EU member states. (PNA/Sputnik) JBP/CDN
