Futran Philippines, Inc. and the Lapu-Lapu City government signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) last May 11, 2023, to allow the company to conduct a feasibility study for a mass transport system project in the city.

Futran, a company that focuses on transportation and public utility service, has offered Lapu-Lapu City a free feasibility study for a mass transport system in the city. The study is said to utilize existing and secondary roads rather than the already busy roads in the city.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan said that the city needs to upgrade its transportation system to compensate for the city’s growing traffic.

Futran said the study would consider a “green concept” monorail system.

Andres Low, who accompanied Futran Philippines, Inc. President Jose Christopher Fornier II during the MOU signing, said the proposed transport system study would use existing roads. They would create an elevated rail system that the monorail will utilize to traverse the city.

The said monorail system will be powered by electricity which will make fares lower for commuters.

Lapu-Lapu City is home to three economic zones with 120,000 workers, a hotspot for tourists, hosting popular resorts, and the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) is also located in the city. (ASC)
