President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is slated to meet United States President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, according to Malacañang Wednesday.

Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles made the statement in a tweet, saying that both leaders will discuss several topics during their meeting.

This will be the first time Marcos will meet Biden.

“Sa unang pagkakataon, nakatakdang makipagkita at makipagpulong ang ating Pangulong bongbongmarcos kay POTUS sa sidelines ng UN General Assembly sa Estados Unidos (For the first time, our President bongbongmarcos is set to meet and have a discussion with POTUS at the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in the United States),” Cruz-Angeles’ tweet read.

Moreover, Cruz-Angeles said that among the topics the two leaders will discuss include Philippine-American relations and trade.

“Inaasahang matatalakay ng dalawang world leader ang pagpapatatag ng relasyong Pilipinas-US na nasa 76 na taon na ng kooperasyon, pagpapayabong ng kalakalan, pamumuhunan sa ating bansa, at iba pang isyu na kinakaharap ng mundo (topics expected to be tackled by the two world leaders are the strengthening of the Philippine-US relations, which is on its 76th year of cooperation, the nurturing of trade between the two countries, the investments in the Philippines, and other world issues),” Cruz-Angeles tweeted further.

The Press Secretary called the meeting of the two leaders a “momentous event.”

In July, Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez said that Biden sent a handwritten letter which was brought by US second gentleman Douglas Emhoff inviting Marcos to visit the US.

Marcos is also expected to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Wednesday.

Marcos is on a six-day working visit in the US from September 18 to 24. (GFB)
