Sepang (PNA/Bernama) — A Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) flight en route to Kuala Lumpur from London Heathrow was hit by severe turbulence when flying over the Bay of Bengal, which left some passengers and crew suffering from minor injuries.

In a statement Sunday, MAB said the small number of affected passengers and crew had been treated by medical officers when Flight MH1, an Airbus A380 aircraft, landed on time at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 6 p.m. today (Sunday).

“Medical crew and Malaysia Airlines senior management met the aircraft on arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). A small number of affected passengers and crew have been treated by medical officers.

“During the flight over the Bay of Bengal the passenger seatbelt light was switched on due to air turbulence.

Due to a brief moment of severe turbulence some passengers suffered minor injuries,” it said.

The statement added that Malaysia Airlines has assisted the 378 passengers and crew onboard MH1 and apologized for any inconvenience caused by this weather event which was entirely beyond its control.

An official from MAB, who did not want to elaborate on the total number of injured passengers and crew, however ensured the airline operator will issue statements from time to time to update on the situation.

Several Whatsapps are currently viral on the incident, with one claiming four passengers and six crew members were injured, while the ‘other latest info’ suggested 34 people in total were injured.

Meanwhile, about seven images are being shared on Facebook and the Whatsapp application, showing a food carts strewn across the floor and aisle, and the overhead units, which appear to be cracked. (PNA/Bernama) JMC/SSC
