The Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) plan to collaborate to create a digital driver’s license that will replace temporary driver’s licenses.

The digital driver’s license is said to replace the official receipt (OR) that is currently being used as a temporary driver’s license. LTO is currently facing a plastic shortage that is used for the physical driver’s license.

In a press release, LTO Chief Jay Art Tugade said the digital license serves as an electronic alternative to the physical driver’s license which will be integrated with the “super app” that is being developed by the DICT.

“The advantage of the digital license is that motorists can present it to law enforcement officers during apprehension. It is equivalent to presenting the physical driver’s license,” Tugade said.

Tugade added that other LTO services will also be accessed with the “super app” including license and registration renewals and online payments.

“We also appreciate the way the super app functions similarly to a wallet, containing all government IDs, among other things, within your mobile device,” Tugade added.

The LTO Chief also said that the super app is one of the projects of LTO and DICT to improve their services through digitization.

“Simplifying and digitalizing more services will ultimately aid the agency in eradicating corruption,” Tugade said. (ASC)
