(PNA) — The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has awarded the detailed engineering design and construction supervision contract for the bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Cebu City, Kunhwa Engineering & Consulting, a Korean company.

DOTC spokesperson Migs Sagcal, confirmed in his official Twitter account that the “DOTC awards the USD 2.9 + Php67.8-million Detailed Engineering Design and Construction Supervision contract for Cebu BRT to Kunhwa Engineering and Consulting.”

Sagcal said that the World Bank would shoulder USD 2.9 million of the total contract price, while the government will provide the counterpart fund amounting to Php 67.8 million.

The Cebu City BRT is the country’s first ever bus rapid transit system, which is also one of the major transport projects under the Aquino administration.

DOTC earlier noted that the system was patterned after the BRT systems in Bogota in Columbia, Curtilba in Brazil, Seoul in South Korea, and Guangzhou in China.

The Cebu BRT is expected to run through bus-ways from Bulacao to Talamban in Cebu, with a link to Cebu’s South Road Property.

It is meanwhile expected to serve about 330,000 passengers per day when it starts operations in 2015. (PNA) RMA/ANP
