Kids Learn Tableya-Making in Gabii sa Kabilin

To allow children to experience and understand how local resources can be made into something valuable to people and be familiar with the traditional Cebuano food preparation methods and delicacies, the Dolores Aboitiz Children’s Fund (DACF) of Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) organized a tableya-making demonstration for kids at the Casa Gorordo Museum during the Gabii Sa Kabilin last May 31.

Women from the Kababayen-an alang sa Katilingbanong Kalambuan (KKK) from Pit-os, Talamban, Cebu City shared with the children their skills in making tableya and sikwate. Children were made to follow the step-by-step procedure after the demonstration.

During the activity, children were introduced to the raw ingredients at different stages of the tableya-making process. They also tried grinding roasted cacao seeds, kneading cacao paste, and molding it into tableyas. They also made sikwate using the traditional batirol.

Tableya-making was one of the children’s activities offered in seven museums during this year’s Gabii sa Kabilin.

This initiative is part of DACF’s advocacy program in promoting awareness and appreciation of local culture and heritage among young children. The activity was also designed to promote experiential learning as a way of maximizing young children’s learning and development.
