Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. expressed his full support for the initiatives of the IT and business process management (IT-BPM) industry based on its Roadmap 2022 targets.

A total of 600 college and university teachers will be training in the Service Management Program (SMP) and Advanced English Proficiency/Pre-Employment Training (AdEPT) in the next three years.

Penny Bongato, Executive Director for Talent Development of the IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP), briefed Gov. Marañon along with Atty. Jocelle Sigue of BNeFIT and 20 representatives from the top schools in Negros Occidental about the projected growth of the industry, the impact on the quality of human capital needed, and consulted with them regarding the implementation of the project. The process of identifying teacher-participants is now ongoing.

IBPAP developed and conducts SMP Train the Teachers (T3) for 5 subjects: Business Communication, Service Culture, Principles of Systems Thinking, and Fundamentals BPO 101 and 102.

The SMP track may be offered by colleges and universities who have IT and BA courses. There were over 600 teachers from 16 State Universities and Colleges all over the Philippines trained under the CHED Project and more than 200 trained through funds from academic institutions.

Negros Occidental was encouraged to follow the measures done by Bacolod City in supporting the IT-BPM sector in 2013 as a next wave city. Carlos Hilado Memorial State College, one of the schools that benefited from the SMP-CHED project, now offer SMP for their IT and BA students and have developed academe-industry linkages with various IT-BPM companies in Bacolod that can accommodate students during their internships.

Advanced English Pre-Employment Training (AdEPT), IBPAP’s program to help students prepare for the global workplace, will also introduce teachers to the pedagogy used by the industry in enhancing the communications skills of their new hires to maintain its advantage in English proficiency.

To attain sustainable growth outside the Centers of Excellence such as Bacolod City, Negros Occidental needs to develop a support system from the neighboring communities. Based on the IT-BPM industry Roadmap 2022, human capital is a major component of growth.
