Heavy Traffic Along BRT Construction Expected for One to Two Months Starting September 25

Expect heavy traffic along portions of two major streets in Cebu City because of the construction of a bus terminal and dedicated lanes for the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (CBRT) system beginning today, September 25.

At Osmeña Boulevard near the Cebu Provincial Capitol, the CBRT will start the closure of a portion of southbound lanes from September 25 until October 14.

This is to make way for the construction of the Capitol BRT Bus Station.

All southbound vehicles and PUJs especially the ones from Guadalupe and Lahug will be diverted to smaller inner roads like Don Gil Garcia Streets exiting towards Fuente Osmena Circle.

Other alternate roads include Jasmin Street parallel to Osmena Boulevard as well as Juana Osmena Street.

For Northbound vehicles, there will be no closure but only one lane can be used as the other lanes are being prepared as dedicated lanes for the CBRT.

Osmena Boulevard is a major road connecting downtown and uptown areas of Cebu City.

Meanwhile, at Natalio Bacalso Avenue, the leftmost lanes of both north and southbound lanes will be temporarily closed for the construction of “dedicated lanes” for the CBRT from September 25 to November 25 or about a two-month period.

The Cebu South Bus Terminal in Cebu City is located along the Natalio Bacalso Avenue which serves as access to all the southern towns and cities of Cebu Province.

The traffic office said there will be strict implementation of traffic rules, especially on designated PUV stops as well as other rules to prevent further congestion of the roads.

Alternate routes included V. Rama Avenue, JM Basa Street, C. Padilla Street, and Leon Kilat Streets.

Heavy traffic was already observed during rush hour this morning. Bumper-to-bumper traffic was seen during those times.

At noontime, traffic was slow moving especially those northbound vehicles from Fuente Osmena Circle towards the Cebu Capitol and Escario Streets.

The Department of Transportation and the Cebu City Government are advising private vehicles to take alternative routes and interior roads for the duration of the road closures.

The construction of the CBRT is targeted to be finished by December this year. (ZAG)
