Healthy Burger Tips

on

A juicy burger continues to remain a common favorite among most foodies. But one can’t deny that this fast food comes laced with a lot of fat and calories. Is giving up on this favorite meal the only way then? A burger need not always be unhealthy. With a few changes, you can transform your burger into a healthy meal.

Here are a few tips to make your burger healthy:

Choose the right bun
While one worries too much about the heavy calorie meat in burgers, one often ignores that the bun also plays a major role in increasing the calories count. You can reduce your calories by opting for whole-wheat or multi-grain burger buns, which provide fiber.

Opt for a healthy patty
While it may seem like a vegetarian burger is always a healthy option, you should know that a meat burger can be made healthy too. Lean meat patties like chicken or turkey patties are a low-calorie option than other meats like lamb or beef. Another way to ensure that your patties are healthy is to opt for a grilled patty, rather than a deep fried one.

Healthy flavors
An extra scoop of sauces, mayo and cheese may add that exquisite taste to your burger but don’t forget that it will also increase the calories in it. Instead incorporate healthy flavors in the patty itself. Season your meat well enough so that you won’t need extra sauces to flavor it. Adding sautéed or caramelized onions and bell peppers is also a healthier option to make it more flavorsome and moist.

Portion control
Controlling the size of the patty is the easiest way to cut down on calories. Add a generous amount of sautéed onions and peppers along with a whole-wheat bun to ensure that it keeps you satiated.

Healthy sides
Substitute french fries with healthier option like potato wedges or baked sweet potato. You can even try well seasoned baked turnip or carrot sticks.
