(PNA) – Gilas Pilipinas defeated Japan, 75-60, on Wednesday to grab a piece of the lead in the ongoing Jones Cup championship at Xinchuang gymnasium in Taipei, according to the website reports.

Newcomer Terrence Romeo proved anew that he can be a good addition to the national team by sparking a 12-2 run midway the second half as the Filipinos pulled away to preserve the win that gave them a 3-1 win-loss card.

The Philippines will face next Iran on Thursday, hoping to get another win that would make the Filipinos virtual champion of the tournament.

The Gilas started their campaign with a 77-69 win over host Chinese Taipei.

The Filipinos suffered an 77-85 loss to South Korea in their next outing but last Tuesday, they bounced back strong to hand the taller Russians their first defeat, 85-71.

Russia has defeated United States, 84-69, before their game against the Philippines. (PNA) RMA/JFM
