Getting Over a Creative Block

Sometimes, you may find it difficult to start anything. As a writer, graphic designer, or any creative, staring at a blank page and not knowing where to start can be frustrating. Well, you, my friend, are experiencing a creative block.

A creative block is a phenomenon in which people struggle to come up with new ideas or make progress on creative projects. It often stems from factors such as stress, self-doubt, or burnout, which make it hard for individuals to tap into their creativity and produce work.

It is a part of every creative’s life — it’s there, it’s part of the creative process. But how do you get over this wall? Luckily, there are ways to overcome it and finish your task on time.

Just Start It

Getting over a creative block can be as simple as just starting. Begin a draft with whatever comes to mind. If you’re a graphic designer, start by putting elements, different colors, or text in your work. If you’re a writer, write anything you can think of without pressing backspace — just keep writing.

By doing this, you will notice that the creative engine inside your head starts moving. Now, from your draft, try to make improvements until you achieve the desired results.

Take a Break

Simply staring at a blank screen won’t be helpful. Why not take a break for a while, free from distractions? You could try taking a nap, finding a comfortable place to sit, or going for a walk outside. This could help you find inspiration or provide a reset to overcome the block. When you do have that breakthrough idea, you can then start your work.

Look for Inspiration from Other Works
If you can’t come up with your own, look at others’ work. It doesn’t mean you should copy their work; instead, find something you like and try to incorporate elements of it into your own.
Find multiple sources for your inspiration, and this will help you create something unique and creative.

Ask for Help

Working together is a great way to get over a creative block. Ask for help from a colleague or a friend; it can provide you with a fresh perspective that may open doors to new ideas.

You have to be kind to yourself. Sometimes, creative blocks happen, but it doesn’t mean they’re permanent. To finish your project, take the first step and remember you’re in control because you’re the creator. (ASC)
