Philippine Ecotourism 101, a comprehensive seminar on ecotourism was held last June 29 & 30, 2017 at Bayfront Hotel in Cebu City.

The two-day comprehensive seminar included 15 talks and presentations covering fundamental concepts and essential tools for creating community-based ecotourism destinations. Topics include basic ecotourism concepts, planning tools for site selection and product development, the role of enterprise development in sustainable management of protected areas, and many more. Case studies were also presented.

This is the 3rd year Philippine Ecotourism 101 is being conducted and is anticipated to be the biggest one yet with more than 180 representatives from all over the country expected to attend.

The seminar was first held in Manila in 2015 and then in Baguio in 2016 with more than 90 participants coming from various local government units, provincial government offices and organizations.

Philippine Ecotourism 101 is mainly for tourism officers, members of Committees on Tourism and Tourism Councils. Planning and development officers, environment and natural resources officers, other government officials as well as educators who also attended the event.

Planning for tourism is a prerequisite for a sustainable industry. We cannot simply let tourism happen to a place if we want our destinations to last for a long time.” said Chen Reyes – Mencias, one of the speakers in the seminar and tourism planner and consultant at Bluewater Consultancy, Training and Services.

This year Generis Events Management in cooperation with Bluewater Consultancy and Ecotourism Philippines is bringing the event to Cebu to make it more accessible to tourism officers in the Visayas and Mindanao. There is so much potential in this part of the country and we want to start them off right. Understanding the true concepts and components of ecotourism is the first step to developing tourism destinations that can
last for many generations.
