The Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotion arm of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), taps and capacitates the creative industry as potential resource.

CITEM-DTI partners with the Cultural Center of the Philippines in promoting the creative industry particularly the performing arts in a week-long summit on September 18-22 at the CCP in Manila where there will be conferences in between the Manila International Performing Arts Market and CREATPH, an exhibition/fair for these artists.

CITEM-DTI and CCP is currently on a tour to bring together performers, artists, artistic directors, companies and capacitate them in the business side of arts.

Marjo F. Evio, division chief of the Creative Industry and Home Lifestyle Division of CITEM said performing arts or the creative industry is a new industry for CITEM.

“This seminar is to capacitate artists on how to brand themselves; price their products and market their services; and then equip them with their Intellectual Property Rights,” Evio said.

Evio added that the creative industry particularly in the Visayas where there are a lot of thriving artists needs a push.

According to Evio, a four-year old Creative Economy Council of the Philippines with the help of the government was created by volunteers who are now creating the roadmap so that by 2030, the creative economy in the country will be known.

About 58 artists, creative, artistic directors, dance companies, chorale groups and events groups from Cebu, Dumaguete, Aklan Iloilo and Bacolod attended Business of Performing Arts capacity building seminar held at The Negros Museum in Bacolod City.

Topics and resource persons include Basic Branding Principle by Alessa Libongco-Lanot; Managing Business for the Arts Sector by John Paul Lanot; and Safequarding Intellectual Property Rights by lawyer BJ Pallatao. (LTP/EAD-PIA6 Negros Occidental)
