DTI Calls Consumers to Understand Sustainable Consumption

Published

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) enjoined consumers to understand the impact of their consumption and to use products that have a minimal effect on the environment.

Natalia Dalaten, officer-in-charge provincial director of DTI-Pangasinan, said consumers should observe sustainable consumption and to always be mindful about what, how and how much one can produce and can consume since Mother Earth’s resources are now depleting and need to be preserved.

Sustainable consumption is defined as “the use of services and related products which respond to basic needs and bring a better quality of life while minimizing the use of natural resources and toxic materials as well as emissions of waste and pollutants over the life cycle of the service or product so as not to jeopardize the needs of future generations.”

Dalaten said to increase the public’s awareness on the importance of protecting the environment through sustainable consumption, this year’s observance of Consumer Welfare Month in October is anchored on the theme “Sustainable Consumption: Understanding the Impact of Consumers’ Choices in a Shared Environment.”

Part of the celebration is a national short film competition which is open to all senior high schools.

Deadline for the submission of entries is on September 20, 2019.

She added, the activities slated for the celebration include a nationwide consumer fun run, entrepreneurship and product standard/consumer awareness seminars in all DTI Negosyo Centers, awarding of 2019 Bagwis Seal to accredited consumer-friendly firms, product standard and consumer awareness seminars in high schools and universities, and discussions through radio and television interviews on some consumer tips and helpful guides on how to improve their business.

“For more details and inquiries on the Consumer Welfare Month, visit the nearest DTI office in your area or contact DTI-Pangasinan at telephone numbers (075) 515-3183 or 529-6177 or send an e-mail at R01.Pangasinan@dti.gov.ph,” she said. (JCR/AMB/PIA Pangasinan)
