DPWH 7 Includes PHP50M for Replacement of Rotting Bridge in Liloan

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7 has included PHP50 million in its proposed budget for next year to build a wider replacement concrete bridge for the rotting existing steel bridge in Suba, Liloan town in northern Cebu, an official said.

DPWH 7 Director Ador Canlas said the Suba Bridge in Liloan town is made of steel and the water under is salty, which corroded the structure.

Its steel components have corroded already, Canlas said.

“The bridge is really dilapidated. The repair is necessary to avoid any untoward incidents in the future,” Canlas said.

Suba Bridge connects one of the alternate roads from northern Cebu to Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City.

Canlas said they will build a modular or temporary bridge while it repairs Suba Steel Bridge in Liloan, Cebu instead of rerouting traffic in the area.

Canlas said the modular bridge will also serve as a detour once the Suba Bridge is demolished next year.

“We are now looking into the possible right-of-way issue that we may face in installing a modular bridge to solve the traffic problem,” Canlas said.

Canlas also said the repair of Suba Bridge despite the new bridge project is necessary not only because of its defects but because thousands of vehicles, including 10-wheeler trucks and prime movers, are passing through it daily. (PNA) LAP/EB/EDS
