DOST 7 and UP Turnovers Digital Map of Cebu to Capitol

Cebu Capitol received a 4,878.7-square kilometer digital map aerial surveyed by Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) on June 18, 2018, making the Province of Cebu the first to have a complete LiDAR coverage in the country.

Department of Science and Technology 7 (DOST 7) and the University of the Philippines’ (UP) Department of Geodetic Engineering turned over the digital map of Cebu to Capitol.

The aerial survey started on December 2017 and ended on March 2018. The processing of the data was completed in May 2018.

LiDAR can precisely build 3D map areas, creating digital terrain (DTM) and elevation models (DEMs) of specific landscapes per 1 square-meter of land which is a big help in refining the geohazard mapping of Cebu.

With the data gathered by the LiDAR, Cebu can inventory different natural resources and help in determining high-risk areas for flooding or landslides, making the development of disaster resilient communities in the future safer and more adaptive. This is according to UP’s press release.

LiDAR has been at the forefront of disaster mitigation programs in the country with the inception of the Disaster Risk and Exposure Assessment for Mitigation (Dream) and Phil-LiDAR 1–hazard mapping of the Philippines using LiDAR technology. (Aljun Cainghog/Cebu Provincial Government)
