The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law have teamed up to conduct a paralegal training program to reinforce the rights of trade unionists and workers last April 11, 2024, in Diliman, Quezon City.

The initiative stems from a Memorandum of Agreement signed by DOLE and UP on August 22, 2023. Its primary goal is to empower trade unionists and their members, enabling them to navigate legal intricacies, verify information, prepare statements, identify leads, and effectively address reported violations.

The training covers a wide range of topics, from basic labor laws to more advanced subjects.

“The training syllabus aims to provide an immersive learning experience covering the spectrum of labor laws – from foundational principles and workers’ rights and obligations to advanced legal topics, including the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020. Additionally, the program addresses contemporary issues like gender fairness in the workplace and offers practical training in case documentation, report writing, and affidavit making,” DOLE said in a press release.

The training serves as a platform to uphold the rights of self-organization, ensure swift legal recourse, and enhance the operational efficiency of monitoring bodies.

The collaboration between DOLE and UP responds to challenges underscored by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

It signifies a pivotal moment in the Philippines’ dedication to adhering to conventions related to workers’ freedom and rights to self-organize. (ASC)
