Mayor Rama wants the proposed ordinance of Councilor Jose Daluz III which requires all household occupants in Cebu City to clean up their surroundings to prevent the spread of dengue would be re-introduced before the next City Council.

Because the proposed ordinance of Daluz has not been approved yet and the term of the present members of the City Council will expire on June 30, the said proposal will no longer be deliberated by the new set of city legislators unless somebody will re-introduce it.

The proposed ordinance of Daluz, if approve, will compel the heads of families and company managers to clean up their respective surroundings and destroy the breeding sites of mosquitoes, otherwise they would be slapped with fines.

According to Daluz while the city officials had acknowledged the achievement of the personnel of the Cebu City Health department in reducing case fatality rate of dengue in Cebu City compared to previous years, but still there is a necessity to reduce the casualties.

There were 13 dengue-related casualties in Cebu City last year while over 3,000 persons, mostly children landed in the hospitals. From January to May 31 this year, there were already two children who died of dengue.

In yesterday’s press conference, Rama described the proposed ordinance as good that is why he wants it to be re-introduced and should be prioritized by the city legislators in order to reduce the number of dengue-related deaths.

City Health Officer Stella Ygoña said the public should always clean up their respective surroundings, particularly the stagnant water, to prevent the mosquitoes to lay egg on said places.
